East Durham College have spent the summer working alongside a new ice cream parlour to help them find the best new recruits ahead of its open.
Truly Scrumptious, based in Peterlee’s Castle Dene Shopping Centre, opened its doors last weekend in an exciting new venture.
In August, owner Steve Jones, contacted the East Durham College employability team to get help in finding a new workforce of nine people to start working in the new parlour.
The college team were delighted to help, holding a successful recruitment open event which saw 100 applicants attend at the college’s Peterlee campus in August.
This was then narrowed down to 20 who all went on to work towards customer service qualifications, with employability team member, Pamela Gordon-Dixon and health and hygiene qualifications through the college, before Steve selected the final nine to be employed.
East Durham College, programme leader for employability, Barbara Archer, was happy that her team could help find new employment for people in the area and hopes Truly Scrumptious will be extremely successful.
Barbara said: “This was a great job for the team, and is part of the service we can offer, here at East Durham College to local employers.
“We really enjoyed working alongside Steve, and it’s great to help a large group of people into employment in this new venture.
“The new parlour looks fantastic and the team are raring to go for the official opening. I wish Steve and Truly Scrumptious all the success for the future.”
Steve Jones, owner of Truly Scrumptious, added: “This has been a long road but we are really proud to final have our new venture open for business.
“The employability team were fantastic from day one. This is the first time that I have been through a recruitment process as an employer and they really helped me in the right direction.
“We started off with 100 applicants at our assessment day and from that we feel we have found a great team in the nine people we employed, I can’t thank the college staff enough.”
